#masocialmedia  BOOK CLUB

Yesterday, 9^th of November, my MA Social Media group organised a Book Club of David Gauntlett book ‘Making is Connecting’. We went to ‘Cafe Blend’ in Birmingham.

I think we’ve been well prepared. Before, we have created an event on Facebook and other relevant social platforms and invited guests.

Each person had to prepare a discussion on different part of the book and questions to the other chapters. Moreover, everyone had a ‘name tag’ so we could tweet quoting the speaker, which was very helpful for our long distance learning students, and people who couldn’t attend the meeting.

I’m not going to tell you step by step what we were talking about, however if anybody is interested, at the end of this blog I pasted our Twitts.

Nevertheless, we had very comprehensive discussion on each chapter of the book. Some people agreed with author’s statements when others tried to prove he wasn’t right. There were even situations where students were arguing (Alina vs Grace). Moreover, we had an exhaustive discussion on creativity and happiness.

§  Why do we need Youtube?

§  What makes you happy?

§  Does money makes people happy?

§  Do happy people live longer?

As we have long distance learning students, they made for us summarising video and we made for them a video from the Cafe Blend. Few of us took the opportunity to give an interview and all in one you can watch it on You Tube (link at the bottom).

We regret David Gauntlett couldn’t be with us, however we are pleased he contributed to the discussion via Twitter.  

We enjoyed the event so much that we are planning to organise another Book Club soon!! We consider ‘Socialnomics’ by Erik Qualman as our next material to work on – what do you think?
